Kristopher Kraus works to develop the institutions and systems appropriate for a resource limited and interconnected 21st century by facilitating expert, interdisciplinary dialogue focused on identifying key “trigger points” of change. Kristopher specializes in communicating the importance of longer-term economic and infrastructure planning and the need for immediate conservation of ecological systems crucial to the well-being of current and future generations.

Since October 2006, Kristopher has worked as the Climate Research Coordinator at the National Environmental Education Foundation, where he engages popular media sources to grow public literacy on energy, climate, and environmental quality issues. Recent focus areas include: weather, climate and the new energy economy; communicating Earth system dynamics to broad audiences through analogy; the value of smart grid, smart growth, and other “green” infrastructure initiatives; innovation ecosystems and government-industry relations; mid-to-long range weather forecasting; sociological factors that influence views on energy and climate issues; and contextualizing current climate change through paleoclimatology. Recent activities include participation in Department of Energy, National Academies and American Meteorological Society climate and energy communications working groups.

Prior to joining NEEF, Kristopher worked at Save America’s Forests, where he promoted United States National Forest roadless area conservation. He also focused on biodiversity conservation in the western Amazon by providing assessments of Ecuador’s hydrocarbon resource management policies, and working with various stakeholders to mitigate the effects of oil extraction in the nation’s megadiverse forests.

Kristopher is a member of the American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union and the American Institute for Biological Sciences. He graduated from Willamette University in 2004 with a BA in Environmental Science.
